The purpose of these white papers is to outline the many types of conflict that emerge in sports, explore potential reasons that destructive conflict occurs, and illustrate the costs that destructive conflict imposes upon administrators, coaches, athletes and supporters, and to recommend specific approaches to preventing and resolving conflict in sports.
Preventing Sports Conflict (PDF)
“We cannot expect athletes or coaches to sever their emotions from the game or from their personal experiences, nor would such measures be of benefit to athletes or the sport. The most effective approach is to channel athletes’ skill, talents, and ambition in the most efficient, constructive way possible to ensure the long-term success of the individual, the team, and the industry. Conflict prevention and resolution, properly understood, is a means of enhancing the competition.
Conflict prevention is, in essence, a distillation process. It helps to eliminate unnecessary distractions so that players can fully concentrate on the game. Eliminating destructive conflict will not dilute the competition spectators relish. It will free the game from clutter – sharpening performance, tightening team play, and heightening suspense.”
Understanding Sports Conflict (PDF)
“Despite the many benefits of sport to society, the current climate of competitive sport is also riddled with costs. Destructive conflict has grown so commonplace that many athletes and supporters are willing to accept it as part of the game. We confuse competition with conflict, and many games are reduced from a societal benefit to an ego-driven fight to avoid defeat at all costs.”
Resolving Sports Conflict (PDF)
“They see the manifestations of the conflict and they genuinely want to stop it, but the roots of such conflict generally run much deeper than that which meets the outside eye. Many times, when trying to curb the costs of destructive conflict, we become so focused upon the symptoms that we overlook the causes. In such cases, the conflict is never truly resolved.”
