Ken Pendleton earned a Ph.D. in philosophy from the University of Oregon (UO), having written his dissertation on how standards of reasonableness are applied to hostile environment sexual harassment cases. He teaches several courses on sports conflict and culture for the CNC program and consults with London-based Football Marketing & Management International. In general terms, the purpose of his teaching and research about sports is to show how the line between healthy competition, on the one hand, and destructive conflict, on the other, is reshaped by class, race, nationality, gender, and other factors, such as commercialism.
Peg Brand, Courtesy Associate Professor in the UO School of Law
Dr. Brand teaches Sports Conflict & Sexual Politics for CNC Spring quarter 2011, along with an Honors College course in bioethics. She is an associate professor of philosophy and women’s studies at Indiana University Purdue University – Indianapolis and the author of many articles in aesthetics, feminist philosophy, and the editor of Beauty Revisited (forthcoming, Indiana University Press). Andrew Breslauer, CNC-Club Sports Coordinator
Mr. Breslauer is a sophomore at the University of Oregon and is currently pursuing a major in Business. Andrew is an avid sports fan especially when it comes to his Ducks. Along with that, he is a huge fan of Arsenal FC and the San Francisco Giants. He has multiple years of experience coaching youth sports along with other experience working with kids. When Andrew is not doing schoolwork, you can find him playing soccer or doing anything sports related. He is also an avid rock climber and food extraordinaire.
Tim Dobyns, A Night at the Races Event Coordinator
Mr. Dobyns is a second-year University of Oregon MBA Student at the Warsaw Sports Marketing Center. Originally from Minnesota, he graduated in 2008 from the University of Wisconsin with a degree in international relations and went on to work for a human rights organization in Lima, Peru as a media communications specialist. Mr. Dobyns is an avid sports participant and fan, and particularly enjoys playing basketball and golf. In the future, he hopes to work in sports sponsorship and brand development and strategy.
Scott Ficklin, CNC Blog Editor
Mr. Ficklin graduated from Utah State University in 2010 with a degree in English and is currently studying law at the University of Oregon. While at Utah State, Scott published his first short story in the literary journal Scribendi. He also helped ESL students improve their writing and grammar as an employee of the Utah State writing center. His interest in sports law developed at an early age while living in Las Vegas, Nevada, where he captained his high school tennis team and fell in love with college athletics.
Garrett Hill, CNC Student Intern, CNC Club Secretary
Mr. Hill was born and raised in Reno, Nevada before coming to the University of Oregon. He is a senior who is majoring in Business Administration. Mr. Hill likes to spend time outdoors, especially when he is fishing or hiking. He enjoys all sports, but his favorite to play and watch is baseball. Mr. Hill’s favorite baseball team is the San Francisco Giants.
Lindsay E. Landstrom, CNC Blogger
Mr. Landstrom is a first-year law student at Oregon. A double duck, Landstrom received his B.A. in English and Communication Studies from the Clark Honors College in June 2009. Mr. Landstrom is an avid basketball fan, having played, coached, officiated, and watched the sport since early childhood. Mr. Landstrom considers himself a professional sports aficionado and hopes to bring this knowledge to CNC in a constructive manner. When he is not doing something sports related, you can find Mr. Landstrom laboring in the law library, doing something music related, or playing highly competitive board games with his significant other. His thesis on colonialism in The Wonderful Wizard of Oz can be found in the Knight and the Honors College Libraries.
Sarah Laxton, Conflict in Sports Teams Process Consultant
Sarah Laxton is a second-year graduate student in the Conflict and Dispute Resolution Program at the University of Oregon. She completed her B.A. in Sociology, with a minor in Psychology, from Northern Illinois University in 2009. Sarah is interested in organizational conflict resolution, especially through the organizational ombudsman function, and in the future hopes to apply her conflict resolution skills in helping individuals and groups find their way through conflict situations in productive rather than destructive ways. Outside of school, Sarah enjoys all kinds of outdoor activity, as well as watching college football, cooking, and travel.
Gordon Levitt, CNC Club Vice President
Mr. Levitt is a Senior Political Science student and is a member of the University of Oregon Robert D. Clark Honors College. As a CNC fellow during the 2010-2011 academic year, he assisted with the creation of CNC’s Sports Peer Mediation course and the system testing of “O-Heroes,” amongst other things. During his time at the University of Oregon, Mr. Levitt has been an active member of two club sports teams – Climbing and Alpine Skiing – and has enjoyed traveling to the outdoor wonders of the Pacific Northwest. This year, Mr. Levitt looks forward to further developing his conflict resolution skills, and is excited to be a part of the CNC team and university club.
Alejandro Mendoza, Public Relations Intern
Mr. Mendoza is from the great city of Portland, Oregon. He is a senior, majoring in Public Relations at the University of Oregon. In addition to being part of the CNC team, Mr. Mendoza works for Ethos Magazine, a student-run publication. He is a sports fanatic who loves the Portland Trail Blazers and the the Oregon Ducks. In his free time he enjoys playing basketball, attending sporting events, and spending time with friends and family. Mr. Mendoza’s future goal is to someday do PR work for a sports organization.
Faith Rathman, CNC-Club Sports Coordinator
Ms. Rathman is a junior at the University of Oregon majoring in Sociology. After college, Ms. Rathman plans to attend graduate school and eventually plans to become a Social Worker working with children and families. She is excited to continue working with the Competition Not Conflict team and to collaborate with Club Sports during the coming year.
Patrick Sponsler, CNC Assessment Services, Prevention and Resolution Services
Mr. Sponsler is a senior in the International Studies department with a focus in Human Rights and Arabic studies. Mr. Sponsler grew up in Indiana and San Diego where he played soccer for most of his youth, and then became a soccer referee for several seasons here in Eugene. Mr. Sponsler is interested in the impact of youth sports in the community. He is currently interning as a CNC KIDSPORTS Ombudsperson.
Breanne Taylor, CNC Prevention and Resolution Service, CNC Course Consultant
Ms. Taylor is a second-year graduate student in the Conflict and Dispute Resolution Program. A double duck, Breanne received her B.A. in Political Science from the University of Oregon in June 2010. Breanne is currently working with Kidsports, a youth sports organization, to develop conflict resolution skills and tools for youth sports. She is an avid football and basketball fan but also enjoys reading and cooking in her free time. In the future, she hopes to work within sports organizations to resolve issues dealing with organizational and personal conflict.
Kara Whipple, Conflict in Sports Teams Process Consultant
Originally from New Jersey, Kara Whipple received her B.S. in Elementary and Special Education from the University of Delaware. After moving to Oregon, Kara went on to obtain a Master’s in Special Education at the University of Oregon. Following a career as a teacher and special education consultant, she decided to return to graduate school. She is currently a second year student in the Conflict and Dispute Resolution Graduate Program. In the future, Kara would like to work as an ombudsperson or in conflict resolution in educational systems.
Ms. Zutz is in her second year of working towards concurrent J.D./M.B.A degrees at the University of Oregon School of Law and the Warsaw Sports Marketing Center at the Lundquist College of Business. She graduated in 2008 from Stanford University with a major in Communication and a minor in Spanish and Portuguese. While at Stanford, Ms. Zutz played four seasons of varsity field hockey and one season of varsity softball. At the U of O, Ms. Zutz has served as a teaching consultant for several CNC classes and contributes weekly to the CNC blog. Her hobbies include playing and watching sports, blogging, and cooking.
