Extracurricular Opportunities
Extracurricular learning is a key part of the ADR student experience. Hands-on, experiential learning offers lessons that can’t be learned in the library or the lecture hall. Applying academic principles in the “real” world fosters judgement, problem-solving skills and confidence. It also prepares our students for professional success after graduation.
- ADRA: Appropriate Dispute Resolution Advocates is a student-run organization offering dispute resolution experience. In March 2002, the UO chapter of ADRA was named Chapter of the Year by the American Bar Association.
- Mediation Training: Coached simulations and intensive workshops teach students to handle conflict, develop mediator skills, find creative options and foster effective communication. Topics include ethics, cross-cultural issues and stages of mediation.
- Negotiation Competitions: An unusually high percentage of our students participate in the American Bar Association’s annual negotiation and mediation advocacy competitions. These provide opportunities to work with other students, practice skills and learn from practicing lawyers and mediators.
- Other: Throughout the year, the ADR Center sponsors conferences, symposia and speakers.
